The cardiology team at Willows specialise in the diagnosis of difficult and complicated cardiac and respiratory problems.
The symptoms of coughing, breathing difficulties or fatigue on exercise can all be attributed to either heart or lung disease and obviously patients with cardiac and/or respiratory problems require prompt investigation and treatment. We aim to see urgent cardiology patients the same day where required and our specialists are happy to provide telephone advice to veterinary surgeons on the management of cardiac and respiratory cases.
Patients dealt with include those with:
- Arrhythmia / abnormal heart rhythm / skipped beats / missed beats
- Cardiomyopathy / valve disease
- Echocardiography / heart scan
- Fainting / collapse / dizzy spells / syncope
- Heart failure / anything heart
- Heart tumour/cancer
- Holter monitor
- Pericardial effusion (aka. Cardiac tamponade)
- Weak pulses
- PDA closure
- Balloon dilatation of PS or other things
The cardiology team at Willows is fully supported by other Specialists in our state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging facility (with in-house MRI and CT scanning ), and Specialists working in our anaesthesia, internal medicine and soft tissue surgery teams. Our highly trained support staff provide superb levels of nursing care for all our patients, including those referred for cardiac problems. Cardiology cases frequently require intensive veterinary and nursing care, and our dedicated Intensive Care Unit is equipped to the highest levels, enabling us to optimise the management of such high-dependency cases.
We are able to provide a full range of investigations, including on-site advanced imaging with a high field MRI scanner, and with the 16 slice CT scanning to evaluate patients.
Surgical treatment provided includes patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure, balloon catheter dilation and pet pacemakers. We are able to optimise the outcome for such challenging surgical cases thanks to our specialist expertise, multi-disciplinary team approach, state-of-the-art operating theatre facilities and excellent intensive care provision.
