Alma wins the battle…
13 November 2015
Alma a young cross breed had a tough start to life living on the streets in Romania. As a puppy she had an accident and broke several bones in her right back leg. The broken bones healed but unfortunately she was left with a deformity of her leg.
She was rescued by Love UnderDogs, a charity doing great work helping stray dogs in Romania. After treatment at the rescue centre in Romania she was brought to the UK and was referred to Willows where she was seen by Orthopaedic Specialist Toby Gemmill.
Alma was admitted to the hospital for further investigation and X-rays showed a deformity at the bottom of her shin (tibia) bone. Toby performed an operation to straighten her leg – the bone was re-set and fixed with two bone plates. After a short stay in the hospital, receiving TLC from the nursing team, Alma was able to return to her carers.
After eight weeks Alma came back to visit Toby and the team. Follow-up X-rays were taken and the bone had healed beautifully.
Alma still has a very slight limp due to some stiffness in her toe joints, a result of her original injuries, but she is able to run and play again. Alma has now been re-homed and is fully enjoying life with her new owners.
X-rays showing the deformed shin bone before the operation (A) and immediately after the operation (B). Eight weeks later the bone has healed well (C).
