Marley bounces back from brain surgery!

8 June 2016

Marley, a very affectionate 9 year old cat, had experienced four seizures that had occurred over the previous five months. Marley’s owners had taken him to their local vet, who had performed blood tests to rule out any blood imbalances that could cause seizures. Marley was then referred to Sinead Bennett, a member of Willows' Neurology Service, for further assessment.

Willows mends a broken heart!

Floyd was seen as a very young puppy for investigations of a very loud heart murmur. A heart murmur is caused by an abnormal, turbulent blood flow in the heart or great vessels. The Easter Bunny!

There are many different stories about how the Easter Bunny came about, one of which is that the Easter Bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German Lutherans who settled in Pennsylvania, and took with them their tradition of an ‘egg-laying hare’ called Osterhase or Oschter Haws.

Canine Babesiosis

Babesiosis is caused by infection with a microscopic organism called Babesia which infects red blood cells causing anaemia, fever and splenic enlargement. There are a number of different species worldwide with Babesia Canis Canis being the most common in Europe and this is spread by tick bites by the species of tick called Dermacentor Reticulates. Until recently Babesia hadn’t been reported in the UK in dogs which hadn’t travelled abroad, however recently cases have been identified in dogs in Essex that haven’t travelled. Naïve ticks, which don’t carry the infection can become infected by biting a dog that has Babesiosis. Further transmission of the infection within the tick population can occur to eggs in the female tick’s reproductive tract resulting in infection of offspring.
