World Blood Donor Day – 14th June 2016

Blood connects us all” is the theme for this year’s World Blood Donor Day, which is held each year as a way of saying thank you to blood donors for their gift of life and encouraging people to care for one another.

108 million blood donations are collected globally each year. There is a constant need for regular blood supply because blood can only be stored for a limited time before use. Regular blood donations by healthy people are needed to ensure that safe blood will be available whenever and wherever it is needed.

Just like people, sick and injured animals frequently need blood transfusions. In many cases, blood transfusions can save a pet's life. Blood is used for many purposes including cases involving trauma, surgery and disease.

Willows work very closely with Pet Blood Bank UK – using their services to supply us with vital, life-saving blood and blood products to help (and often save) our patients. We also host regular blood donor sessions in conjunction with Pet Blood Bank UK and would urge you to consider your dog as a potential donor.

We would like to say an enormous thank you to all of our doggy blood donors – you may not understand why you come and see us when you’re not ill, but each time you give blood, it can help save the lives of up to four critically ill dogs. So here’s to you – in our eyes, you’re all heroes.

The next blood donor session at Willows is:

Tuesday 5th July

If you are interested in your dog becoming a potential life-saving donor, please call Pet Blood Bank UK directly on the following number:
