It’s World Blood Donor Day!

14 June 2017

This annual event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their lifesaving gifts of blood!

What better way to celebrate this day than by recognising all the amazing donors that give blood and that includes our human and furry friends!

We regularly host sessions at Willows for the Pet Blood Bank UK. The Pet Blood Bank is a not-for-profit organisation that provides life-saving blood products for dogs throughout the UK. The sessions often see some of our fantastic team bring in their dogs to donate blood to their canine cousins too! We receive a fantastic service from the Pet Blood Bank and this greatly improves our ability to manage a wide range of life-threatening and complex illnesses in dogs, many of whom are referred to us for Specialist care. Some of these patients need transfusions with blood or blood products, and many of our patients have benefitted from treatment that would not have been possible without the help and support of the Pet Blood Bank.

Did you know that cats can donate blood too? Unfortunately, feline blood cannot be stored in the same way that canine and human blood can so there isn’t a blood bank for our feline friends. Often when a feline blood donor is needed, our team members’ cats are often called upon. Tigger is a lovely boy, an American Shorthair that lives with our IT Manager Mike - he has been a superstar and donated blood 3 times to date!

We would also like to help spread the word and encourage people to donate by sharing the amazing efforts by some of our very own team who also regularly give blood.

Jenny is one of Willows’ registered veterinary nurses. She has been donating blood since she was 18 years old and has donated 41 times to date - Jenny you are a star!

Here is Jenny with her dog Paddy. Paddy also regularly donates blood and his blood is used for the serum to make special eye drops.

Jo is another one of our lovely nurses who donates her platelets every six weeks! Jo’s blood type is rhesus –A which only makes up 8% of the population. Platelet donations are given to patients who are unable to make enough platelets in their bone marrow. Platelets may be given after major surgery due to platelets lost through bleeding or to patients with leukaemia or other cancers who may have too few platelets as the result of their disease or treatment. Platelets can help up to 3 adults or even 12 children! As platelets can only be stored for a few days, regular donations are always in great demand and Jo gives up her own time every 6 weeks to donate. Jo is a life saver!

Dynamic duo, nurse Louise and her Labrador, Poppy, have doubled up and started their blood donor journey together. Louise made donating blood her New Year’s resolution last year and has so far donated blood twice. Poppy has matched her donations and also donated twice. Keep up the amazing work Louise and Poppy!

It’s World Blood Donor Day!

Our primary care vet Sam is a long standing donor and has donated her blood 26 times! Sam is also a locum for the Pet Blood Bank. Here she is with Hugo, who has just donated blood. Hugo belongs to Victoria our anaesthesia intern - it really is a team effort!

It’s World Blood Donor Day!
