Peaches' puzzling pallor problem

Peaches, a pretty young Japanese Spitz, was taken to her vets for a routine spay. Fortunately, her vets were quick to notice that Peaches' gums were very pale. Rather than operating, they did a blood test which showed that Peaches was anaemic – in other words she had too few red blood cells in her circulation. At Willows we see a wide variety of patients some of whom have life-threatening diseases associated with blood loss and severe anaemia. Some of these patients need transfusions with blood or blood products, and many of our patients have benefitted from treatment that would not have been possible without the help and support of the Pet Blood Bank. This is a not-for-profit organisation that provides life saving blood products for dogs throughout the UK. We receive a fantastic service from the Pet Blood Bank and this greatly improves our ability to manage a wide range of life-threatening and complex illnesses in dogs, many of whom are referred to us for Specialist care...

Whiskey gets a new spring in his step

Barley’s story

We first met Barley, a Jack Russell Terrier when he was 6 months old and we are quite proud that he is now 4 years old! He first showed that he had no intention of being like other dogs when he had much more bleeding than usual from his gums when his adult teeth came through. He also became lame sometimes with a painful swelling affecting one of his legs which was due to a large haematoma or bruise. He has also developed occasional swellings over his rib cage...
