Willows Specialist Alastair develops an App

20 August 2017

Willows anaesthesia Specialist Alastair Mair, has developed an app after becoming frustrated by poor hand-written record keeping while working in Australia. The VETNAPP app has been developed to ensure all the vital details of an anaesthetic procedure are recorded and is available for veterinary practices.

It offers a replacement to paper records and allows entry of drugs administered, physiological parameters, for example heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and complications occurring during an anaesthetic. The final anaesthetic chart can be converted to a PDF and attached to patient records.

Alastair said: “I developed the app in partnership with an IT graduate. It is a replacement for paper records, with features such as you cannot move on to the next page until all data fields are complete. It also allows storage of thousands of records and therefore allows easy retrieval of records, and prevents lost records. VETNAPP is designed to meet the needs of a general veterinary practitioner and that of a veterinary Specialist in anaesthesia and analgesia.”

At present, VETNAPP is only available for the iPad – an android version has still to be developed. It can be downloaded from the website address below.

Alastair graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2001. He initially spent two years in mixed practice in Scotland before undertaking a general internship at a private referral hospital in southern England. This led to an internship in anaesthesia at the University of Bristol, followed by a residency at the University of Glasgow.

He moved to the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Sydney, Australia in April 2012 where he was employed as registrar in veterinary anaesthesia, progressing to Head of Department. He holds the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia and is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA).

To download VETNAPP, go to the Apple App Store.
