Be prepared when travelling with your pet!
24 June 2015
Recently a famous actor got himself into a lot of bother over flying his pets to Australia without completing the relevant paperwork in advance.
Australia has very strict rules on the importation of animals in order to protect their biosecurity (that is to stop importation of disease and parasites into their country).
So it is important to remember that if you are thinking of travelling with your pet, you should check the requirements of the country you are visiting. Your vet can help you complete the relevant checks however you must remember the ultimate responsibility for having the correct paperwork lies with you. Some airlines will also have special criteria for travelling with them and most will request a ‘fit to fly’ certificate signed by your vet prior to travel.
Preparation for travelling to countries outside the EU often needs to start at least 6 months in advance of travel.
Don't get caught out and do your homework early, otherwise you could end up like that famous pirate, in rather stormy water!
