Pain management
All patients undergoing surgery at Willows benefit from a multi-modal approach to their pain management.
Techniques used include:
- Epidural injections and catheter placement
- Local anaesthetic blocks
- Continuous rate infusions
- Acupuncture
The Anaesthesia team is closely involved in the analgesia of all hospitalised patients and available for telephone advice for referring veterinary surgeons.
Critical care
- Contributing to a multidisciplinary approach to our critical care patients
- Veterinary surgeon and nurse on site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- Out of hours assessment and case management by Specialists
- Invasive monitoring continued into ICU
- Ability to ventilate patients in the short to medium term
- Extensive experience in managing trauma, neurological and medical critical cases
Critical care anaesthesia
- Assessment, stabilisation and anaesthesia of trauma, neurological and medical patients
- Anaesthetic protocol tailored to the individual patient
- Advanced monitoring including:
- Invasive arterial blood pressure
- Central venous pressure
- Respiratory mechanics
- Blood gas analysis
- Maintenance of anaesthesia with total intravenous techniques when appropriate
- Full crash facilities including defibrillation in theatres and in ICU
Routine case management
All patients anaesthetised at Willows benefit from having:
- Supervision of anaesthetic protocol by
an Anaesthetist - Basic patient monitoring including:
- Dedicated nurse for each patient
- Non-invasive blood pressure measurement
- Doppler
- Oscillometric
- End-tidal capnography
- Pulse oximetry
- Temperature
- ECG

- All staff involved are fully trained to work in the MRI environment
- Challenging brain cases commonly anaesthetised and closely monitored

- Monitoring anaesthesia
- Pain assessment and management
- CPR training for all clinical staff on a yearly basis, to ensure an efficient and effective response in times of emergency
