Willows has seven veterinary surgeons with advanced training in spinal surgery, constituting one of the most experienced teams of small animal neurosurgeons in the UK. They have developed a number of innovative surgical techniques to manage difficult spinal conditions, such as cervical spondylopathy (Wobbler syndrome), and they are regularly invited to speak at conferences both nationally and internationally.

With the benefit of advanced diagnostic and surgical facilities, our spinal surgeons are able to offer a comprehensive service for dogs and cats with acute and chronic spinal cord injuries or spinal pain. They provide a 24-hour emergency service that enables urgent cases to be seen at very short notice. Our surgeons are supported by a highly trained and caring team of veterinary nurses who play a critical role in rehabilitating patients following spinal surgery, should this be required.

Pets referred for spinal problems undergo detailed evaluation and neurological assessment prior to the veterinary surgeon discussing any recommended investigations and treatment options. The outlook and aftercare following any possible surgical procedures are also thoroughly discussed. The neurosurgery team consider this to be an extremely important aspect of their patient and client care. Not every spinal case requires surgery, and our veterinary surgeons will always consider the potential for conservative management of spinal conditions where this is appropriate.

The most common conditions treated at our spinal surgery unit are slipped discs in the neck and back, and injuries caused by trauma, such as spinal fractures and dislocations. The aim of most surgical procedures is either to alleviate pressure on the nerves in the spinal cord and spinal nerves, or to stabilise affected vertebrae. Occasionally, both procedures are recommended. Other spinal conditions that may be managed with surgery include spinal deformities, instabilities and cysts.
