Willows has offered a referral ophthalmology service since the beginning of 1992 and now has one of the strongest veterinary ophthalmology teams in the UK. Our three RCVS Recognised Ophthalmic Specialists are assisted by two ophthalmology residents who are nearing the end of their training programmes. With the benefit of advanced diagnostic and surgical facilities, our ophthalmic team is able to offer a comprehensive service for our eye patients.

In addition to the routine ophthalmic examination techniques of close and distant direct ophthalmoscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit-lamp biomicroscopy and tonometry (rebound or applanation), other more advanced diagnostic techniques such as gonioscopy, ocular ultrasonography and electroretinography are in everyday use. Patients undergoing eye surgery benefit not only from the expertise of our skilled ophthalmologists, but also from the availability within the practice of such items as our high specification Zeiss operating microscope, top quality microsurgical instrumentation, laser unit and a considerable range of other specialised ophthalmic surgical equipment.

Our ophthalmologists have a broad spectrum of interests in both medical and surgical eye conditions, such as eyelid disorders and reconstructive lid surgery, glaucoma management, investigation and treatment of ocular inflammatory disease, sudden onset blindness/SARDS (sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome), corneal sequestrum and corneal grafting procedures for the management of corneal ulcers and other disorders of the cornea. They also have a major interest in lens luxation and cataracts, and especially in their surgical management by phacoemulsification.
