Specialist Referral Service

Specialist Referral Service

The Specialist vets working in Willows multi-disciplinary referral service provide the highest levels of care for dogs and cats referred to us by veterinary surgeons across the UK. Within the practice we have a team of highly trained and skilled veterinary Specialists working in a number of disciplines. If your dog or cat is being referred to us by your veterinary surgeon, you can rest assured that our team of Specialist vets will provide the best care possible, whatever the problem may be.

What is a referral?

Just like doctors, no vet can be an expert in every field, and there are times when even the best primary care vet cannot deal with a patient's problems. At this stage they may well suggest referral i.e. sending the pet to someone who has greater expertise in that area and, potentially, more specialised equipment to deal with the problem.

Whilst there are veterinary surgeons with varying levels of qualification and expertise who take referrals from other vets, a Diploma holding recognised Specialist is the most qualified person who can be seen in the event that a referral is required.

What is a Specialist?

An officially recognised veterinary Specialist is an individual who has had advanced training leading to Diploma status in their field of expertise and who also fulfils other stringent criteria, such as those regarding their involvement in clinical work and research, as well as other responsibilities including the training of others involved in the veterinary profession. Specialist vet status is extremely difficult both to achieve and to maintain, and it is the highest level of recognition of expertise that can be attained in clinical veterinary work.

Our Specialist vets have national and international reputations and most have written scientific papers, published in text books and regularly speak at local, national and international meetings. As well as offering continuing education to other members of our profession, our vets regularly attend scientific meetings in order to keep up-to-date in their specific fields of expertise. When required they travel to the USA and Europe learning new techniques and exchanging ideas with other international experts.

Why should I come to Willows when my pet is being referred?

Willows Veterinary Referral Service

We are totally committed to providing the highest levels of patient and client care – we treat patients as we would want our own pets to be treated, and we have a professional, friendly team of staff who are dedicated to giving you the help, clear explanations and support that you require at what we fully appreciate can be a stressful time.

Our state-of-the-art diagnostic, surgical and hospitalisation facilities are some of the best in small animal practice across Europe, and are matched by the quality, training and dedication of our veterinary and support staff teams. Because our Specialist vets and clinical support staff deal with a wide variety of problems we are able to provide top levels of care, even if a patient already has or develops a complex problem.

Willows provides 24 hour veterinary emergency service 365 days of the year

Unlike many referral centres, our Specialists work full time at Willows and they provide a 24 hour emergency service 365 days of the year, with the result that the continuity of care provided is unsurpassed.

Willows is a Cat Friendly Clinic (Gold Level) - we take special care to make sure that the special needs of our feline patients are taken into consideration at every stage. To learn more, click here...

Willows provides a cat friendly environment and has ben accredited by International Cat Care as a Cat Friendly Clinic at the Gold Level

Specialist run diagnostic imaging (scanning and X-ray) department

Willows Specialist Run Diagnostic Imaging Department

We have veterinary Specialists working in our diagnostic imaging department, meaning that any scans or X-rays performed are supervised at the time by highly experienced clinicians. This contrasts with centres where a diagnostic imager may not be present when a scan is performed, sometimes resulting in the scan being incomplete or non-diagnostic (further imaging, and potentially another anaesthetic, might then be required at a later date). At Willows all such investigations are tailor-made to the individual patient's needs, performed on state-of-the-art equipment and interpreted by an imaging Specialist vet.

Specialist level anaesthesia and pain control

Willows Specialist level anaesthesia and pain control

In the event that your pet should require a general anaesthetic, you can have the peace of mind, knowing that we have Specialist supervision and individual monitoring of every general anaesthetic procedure carried out, and that this is backed up by superb levels of equipment for monitoring and supporting anaesthetised patients.

Pain management and patient comfort are extremely important to us, and the best techniques and drugs regimes are used, again under Specialist supervision, to ensure that every patient gets the pain relief that it needs.

Willows has experienced veterinary and nursing staff on duty, on the premises and caring for all our in-patients 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Our patients benefit from continual monitoring and attention from fully qualified, trained veterinary and nursing staff, whether during the day, the night or on weekends and public holidays. We have hygienic, climate controlled dog and cat wards and a fully equipped and staffed Intensive Care Unit.

Our track-record

Willows superb 24 hour in-patient care

Patients come from all over the UK to be treated by our veterinary Specialist teams, and we not infrequently see patients from as far away as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. We continually strive to enhance and improve the service we offer to owners, their pets and the veterinary surgeons who entrust their patients to our care.

In our client feedback survey we are consistently scored 5/5 in every category by over 80% of our clients, and every year referring vets entrust over 4000 patients to the care of our Specialist veterinary clinicians.

What our clients say about us...

Superb facility and I felt really assured. Baxter received the best treatment and care. Thank you.

Exemplary facility, excellent service.

Amazing!

Superb all round – even when I was late for my appointment because of traffic on the motorway, staff were accommodating and the vet still saw me. The appointment wasn’t rushed and the vet was patient and attentive.

Very pleased with whole service after being referred.

Delighted to have been referred by our vet.

A very caring and professional practice with very talented and attentive staff. The NHS should pay attention to your work and service.

Both my wife and I were overwhelmed with your organisation and professional approach. Your surgery and its facilities would put much of the NHS to shame. Please continue to provide your excellent service.

Fantastic surgery, only wish it was located closer to us so we could use it more.

Superb, more practices should follow your example!
