Unlike humans, our pets aren't able to tell us that they have a problem such as a toothache, earache, reduced vision or a pain in their tummy.  It is only when such problems become very severe that they will develop outward signs of being in trouble, for example by becoming lethargic, showing evidence of being in pain (e.g. lameness, difficulty getting up/jumping, crying, yelping, not wanting to be touched etc.), bumping into things or going off their food. It is therefore very important that our pets are given regular health checks by a vet in order to catch these problems early on.

Health checks, which involve a general physical examination as well as the vet asking you questions about your pet, are performed by our vets each time that they vaccinate an animal – the cost of this examination is included in the cost of the vaccination.  Regular vaccination – which is advisable for dogs, cats and rabbits – therefore offers an excellent opportunity for your pet to have an annual check-up and also for you to raise any queries you may have about your pet's health. Our vets will also offer you advice about regular care for your pet such as exercise, diet, worming and flea/other ectoparasite control and dental care.  These are all very important aspects of keeping your pet as healthy as possible.

As part of our welcome pack for new puppies and kittens, we offer a free health check at 6 months of age to those pets who have had their initial course of puppy or kitten vaccinations (and associated health-checks) with us. We will send you a reminder for this free health check when it is due.

Although the health checks performed at the time of annual vaccination may be sufficient for generally healthy pets in the prime of life, it is appropriate to check some individuals (e.g. those which are pregnant, elderly, obese or have ongoing health problems) more regularly – your vet will advise you on what the most appropriate intervals are for your pet's health checks.
